Under the previous polytechnic structure and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the institution faced rigid regulatory caps that limited growth. For instance, the Dental Nursing programme was established to address a continental gap; previously, no specialized dental nursing training existed in Africa, often leading to the premature daily closure of dental clinics due to a lack of specialized aftercare staff.

While the transition created temporary administrative bottlenecks—particularly regarding NYSC mobilization and overlapping approvals between the NUC and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria—the university management is actively collaborating with federal agencies to resolve these legacy issues.
