A Big Day for Science: Professor Faith Babalola Makes History!
On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, something very special happened at the University of Lagos. Professor Faith Uchenna Babalola gave a very important speech called an "Inaugural Lecture."
Why was this a big deal? Because she is the first woman ever from the Engineering department to do this since the school started over 60 years ago! She showed everyone that girls can be leaders in science and building things.
What is Thermodynamics?
Professor Babalola studies a big word called Thermodynamics. That sounds like a tough subject, doesn't it? Many people think it is just boring math, but the Professor explained that it is actually about how energy and heat work in our world.
She uses science to solve real-life problems, like:
- Helping the Earth: She finds ways to use the sun’s energy to make electricity for homes.
- Keeping People Safe: She made a math "tool" that helps predict when big tanks of gas might be dangerous so we can stop accidents before they happen.
- Checking Our Food: She even found a way to use science to tell if honey is pure or if it has been mixed with fake stuff!
Working Hard to Reach the Top
Professor Babalola wasn't always a famous scientist. She started just like you!
- School Days: She went to primary school in Nnewi and Maiduguri. She studied very hard in high school, too.
- College: She went to college to learn how to be a Chemical Engineer.
- Teaching: She has been a teacher for over 30 years! She loves helping students learn how to solve problems.
- She is a Mom: She is married and has three children.
- She is an Inventor: She helped create a special science rule called the Peng-Robinson-Babalola-Susu rule. It helps oil companies work safely underground.
- She is a Leader: She was the boss of her whole department at the university!
"Engineering is for everyone. It helps us build a better world and keep people safe."
Why This Matters
For a long time, most engineers were men. Professor Babalola proved that with hard work and a "never give up" attitude, women can reach the very top.
She is a member of a group called APWEN, which stands for the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria. They cheer for girls who love math and science.
Fun Facts About Professor Babalola
The lesson of the day: Whether you want to study the sun, keep people safe, or be the first person to do something amazing, you can do it if you keep learning!
